Five Reasons To Visit Blenheim, New Zealand

21st Nov 12

Just a short drive from the Marlborough sounds, you'll find Blenheim - the major urban centre of the Marlborough region. Known for its warm summer weather, crisp winters, wine industry and gourmet goods, it's a great place to relax, unwind and explore. Here are just five reasons Blenheim would make the ideal destination for your next holiday...

Marlborough Wineries

Blenheim is New Zealand's largest winemaking region with more than 65 wineries and 290 grape growers in the region. If you would like to taste some of their many Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, Pinot Gris' and Gewurztraminers, you'll find more than 20 wineries within driving distance of the central township. Most feature cellar door tastings and purchases - or visit vineyards like Allan Scott and Brancott Estate to enjoy food and wine pairings at their restaurants.

The Queen Charlotte Track

Known for its spectacular views of lush coastal forest, historic bays and skyline ridges, the Queen Charlotte Track is a 71-km long, diverse coastal track accessible by boat from Picton. You can walk or bike the track over 2-5 days depending on your fitness level and there are a number of accommodation stops along the way where you can rest overnight.

Natural wonders

The Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of flooded valleys including the Queen Charlotte Sound, the Keneperu Sound and Pelorus Sound. The sheltered waters are not only breathtakingly beautiful, but ideal for sailors and adventure seekers. Explore the waters by boat or kayak, or trek the coastlines to discover native shags, herons, blue penguins, dolphins and seals, native birds and lush New Zealand rainforests.

Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and Omaka Classic Cars

Thanks to Peter Jackson, Wingnut Films and Weta Workshop, you can enjoy unique Aviation memorabilia and dramatic depictions of past-wartime events at Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre . This family friendly attraction is a must-see for all visitors to Blenheim!  While you're there, make sure you visit Omaka Classic Cars  - a unique collection of more than 100 classic cars with more than half on display at any one time. You'll get a rare insight into both Marlborough and New Zealand's motoring scene from the 1950's to the 1980's viewing these original cars up-close.

The River Queen Riverboat cruises

The River Queen  is an iconic family-owned and operated riverboat travelling up and down the Opawa River. While visiting Blenheim, make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy a journey along one of the most scenic sections of the river while enjoying local food, wine and beers.
